Influencer ad spend growing faster than traditional ad investment

Influencer ad spend is accelerating faster than investment in traditional adverts.

Brands were advised to consider adjusting their campaign strategies to align with the rising popularity of influencers after this finding was revealed in Insider Intelligence’s Influencer Marketing 2023 report.

Why we care. As more businesses embrace influencer marketing, the way people consume ads is shifting. This suggests that traditional ads might not work as well anymore. Advertisers should stay updated on these changes to ensure they get the most out of their ad investments.

Income breakdown. The report included a detailed breakdown of how influencers are generating incomes on their platforms (% of respondents):

  • Sponsored content – 82%
  • Affiliate – 56%
  • Advertising revenue – 33%
  • Creatore funds – 25%
  • Paid content subscriptions – 16%
  • Selling merchandise – 15%

Influencer opportunities on the rise. The Hollywood writers’ strike could create more chances for influencer marketing, which may accelerate influencer ad spend even further, according to the report. This is because content creators are likely to seek alternative ways to make money during the strike. Additionally, social platforms are actively trying to attract top creative talent, which is likely to open up more possibilities for brand partnerships.

What has Insider Intelligence said? A spokesperson from Insider Intelligence said in the report:

  • “The time to act is now. Influencer marketing spending will rise roughly 3.5 times faster in 2023 than social ad spending will. That’s a testament to the resilience of creators, even amid economic concerns and major competition.”

Google says its Android runtime makes apps faster, even without an OS update

Google’s latest blog post is all about extolling the virtues of ART, the Android runtime, and its new ability to be updated independently of the OS. ART is the engine that powers Android and is responsible for compiling Java and Kotlin into bytecode and executing it. Updates to ART have let Google improve the speed of apps, even without a full OS update. With the rollout of the Android 13 version of ART, Google said it has seen “real-world app start-up improvements of up to 30% on some devices.”

ART officially became a modular part of the OS (an APEX module) in Android 12, allowing it to be updated via the Play Store instead of a system update. With the current Android distribution numbers, that means about 31 percent of users (or 600 million users) regularly get a better, faster app engine. While many components have been slowly moved into an APEX module, Google said ART is the biggest one, with “an order of magnitude more APIs than any other APEX module.” Google has started versioning ART like it’s a major software project, and with Android 14 will come “ART 14.” The newest version of the runtime won’t be limited to Android 14, though—it and most of its improvements will roll out to older OSes, too, so it’s possible to run ART 14 on your neglected Android 12 phone.

As for ART 13, Google provided the above chart to show when the new update rolled out and the effect it has had on average app startup time. Google detailed some of the ART 13 changes with the release of Android 13, saying that “ART [13] makes switching to and from native code much faster, with

Google claims coming Android upgrade makes apps start faster

Need for speed

Google claims that the latest update to the Android Runtime (ART) has resulted in app startup time improvements of up to 30 per cent on some devices.

The search engine outfit said that while “ART is the same for all devices the APEX module is a complex piece of software with an order of magnitude more APIs than any other APEX module. It backs a quarter of the developer APIs available in the Android SDK.

ART has a compiler that aims to make the most of the underlying hardware by generating chipset-specific instructions, such as Arm SVE.

” The testing process for Android Runtime updates involves “compiling over 18 million APKs and running app compatibility tests, and startup, performance, and memory benchmarks on a variety of Android devices that replicate the diversity of our ecosystem as closely as possible,” Google said.

Google notes developer improvements with every update “like OpenJDK improvements and compiler optimizations that benefit both Java and Kotlin,” with ART 13 resulting in the “fastest-ever adoption of a new OpenJDK [11] release on Android devices.”

ART 14 is rolling out “in the coming months” with “new compiler and runtime optimisations that improve performance while reducing code size,” as well as OpenJDK 17.

Samsung Good Lock module One Hand Operation + lets you launch your favorite apps faster than ever

Good Lock has become such a staple of the Samsung experience that, for many of us, it’s something we couldn’t do without. One of my favorite modules has always been One Hand Operation +. Weird name aside, the level of customization it gives you over gesture navigation has ruined other phones for me. Whenever I use a device without it, I miss it instantly. Now the module is getting even better, with a new gesture action that helps you open your favorite apps faster than ever.

As spotted by Twitter user TechByBD, the latest update to the module adds a quick launcher feature. As you can see in the GIF above, when you first enable the quick launcher, it’s filled with a random assortment of apps. Thankfully, that can easily be changed, so let’s look at how to enable it, customize it, and whether it’s worth using.

How to use quick launcher

  1. Open One Hand Operation +.
  2. Tap on either right handle or left handle based on which you want to use.
  3. Tap on one of the six gestures, depending on which you’d like to trigger quick launcher.
  4. Scroll down and tap on quick launcher.

With that done, quick launcher is now assigned to the gesture of your choice. Like the GIF at the beginning, in this state, it’ll just be filled with a handful of your apps — so from here, you’ll want to make it your own.

  1. Use your assigned gesture and wait for the settings cog to appear next to the launcher before tapping it.
  2. Tap on the minus symbol next to each icon to remove anything you don’t want.
  3. To add an app or shortcut, tap on the 3×3 grid in the bottom right.
  4. Tap on any app or system shortcut you want

Google Chrome on Android just got a lot faster, but only on selected devices

Google Chrome’s recent updates have made the browser less of a resource hog than it was previously, thanks to Google’s extensive under-the-hood fine-tuning to reduce the browser’s appetite for CPU, memory, and battery resources. The latest improvements to Chrome take things a step further by making the browser 30% faster than ever, but only on high-end devices.

The search giant shared in a blog post some of the tweaks it made to give Chrome a speed boost. Chrome’s latest version includes some technical upgrades that will cut down on memory usage to bolster its speed and efficiency.

Chrome on Android now prioritizes speed over binary size using compiler flags. Prior to this, the browser would sacrifice these flags in favor of binary size. Google points out that Chrome on Android “has always been optimized for a small footprint, but the Android ecosystem is diverse and contains devices with varying levels of capabilities.” As a result, the Chrome team cooked up a special version of the browser targeted at many of the top Android phones.

This change has led to a 30% increase in Chrome’s speed on the Speedometer 2.1 benchmark. Google says this speed boost has been achieved through some tweaks to the browser’s underlying code, including enhancements to the JavaScript “Object.prototype.toString” and “Array.prototype.join” functions, as well as specialized fast paths for parsing to “innerHTML.”

Additionally, the team found a way to save memory in both V8 and Oilpan with pointer compression. This means that Google has improved how pointers are compressed and decompressed, ensuring that high-traffic fields are not compressed. Consequently, Chrome Desktop saw a 10% increase in Apple’s Speedometer 2.1 browser benchmark over a period of three months.
