TL;DR

  • The latest Android TV 14 beta includes a video that shows off the outline of a new TV remote.
  • This TV remote is similar to the one included with the Google Chromecast with Google TV but with more buttons on its surface.
  • One of these buttons would be a star button that the user can customize to open a favorite app or switch TV input.

The Google Chromecast with Google TV is one of the better Android TV streaming boxes you can buy now. It’s not due for a refresh per se, but new features and new hardware are always appreciated. We’ve heard of Google working on a new Chromecast with Google TV at the beginning of this year, but leaks have slowed since then. But it seems that the product is still underworks, as the company may have accidentally leaked the new remote of this new Chromecast with Google TV.

Prolific Android expert Mishaal Rahman spotted a video in the latest Android TV 14 beta. This video shows an outline of a remote. The outline is similar to the current remote of the present generation Google Chromecast with Google TV. But the button layout is different, with more circular single buttons, two oblong double buttons, and a new star button.

For comparison, this is what the current generation remote looks like:

The new star button is said to be used for a “magic button” customization setting on Android TV 14. Users would be able to choose whether they want the button to open a favorite app or view and switch inputs for TV or other devices.

If we are allowed to speculate, some of the extra buttons could be for partnered streaming services. Streaming services pay license fees

The next Chromecast with Google TV remote might have a star button

Google might have a new Chromecast with Google TV in the pipeline, and its remote seems to house some extra buttons compared to the previous version. Android deep diver Mishaal Rahman dug into the latest Android TV 14 beta release and found a system video showcasing the outline of what looks like a brand-new remote designed to control Google TV software.

The new remote bears a resemblance to the current flat pill-shaped remote, first introduced in 2020, with an iPod-like dial (minus the touch sensitivity) toward the top on the front. But now, the six main control buttons seem to have scattered to make room for what could be a new volume or channel rocker matching the diameter of the face buttons.

The final row of buttons on the new remote, which is in a dip with two smaller buttons including the power button on the current model, now has what looks like a star button on the right side. Rahman points out that this could be a customizable “magic button,” which first showed up in early leaks of the original remote in 2020 but didn’t make it to the final design. The star button might let you create shortcuts to your favorite app.

Google’s added more control options for its products as of late. In January, it added new TV remote controls in the Google Home app, and the company’s new Pixel Tablet released in the summer has handy smart home controls when docked. If this new Google TV remote (and Chromecast) is real, we might hear more about it at Google’s Made by Google event on October 4th.

Turn your phone into a TV remote with Google TV app

Every now and then, we all misplace our TV remotes. If you are in the same boat or don’t feel like finding the remote, you can use your smartphone to control your smartTV. With just a few taps on your phone’s screen, you can regain control of your TV viewing experience without having to search for that elusive remote. Here’s how to set up the Google TV app and use your iPhone or Android device to control your Android-powered TV.

1. To use your phone as a TV remote, open Google Play Store or Apple App Store and install the ‘Google TV’ app.

2. Make sure the TV you want to connect is turned on and the phone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network or have Bluetooth turned on.

3. Now, you need to connect the Google TV app to your TV. To do so, press the ‘Connect TV’ button on the bottom right of the screen.

4. Select your TV and enter the code that appears on your TV screen. Click on the ‘Pair’ button to complete the process.

5. The ‘Connect TV’ will now appear as  ‘TV Remote’ button. Clicking on it will open a new screen replicating the TV remote.

Here you can easily control the device volume, trigger Google Assistant, go back or home and surf channels. The paired TV can also be controlled from the Google Home app or by adding a quick settings tile.
