TL;DR

  • The Vita3K emulator is now available on Android devices.
  • It allows users to emulate PlayStation Vita games on a phone or tablet.

The PlayStation Vita was Sony’s last handheld gaming console, bringing a selection of exclusive games, console ports, RPGs, and indie games. We heard last week that the first Vita emulator for Android would be launching imminently, and the app is finally available to download.

The Android version of the Vita3K emulator launched on Sunday (February 12) via the Vita3K Discord group. The app isn’t available via the Play Store though, but the APK can be downloaded via the android-info channel.

As for minimum requirements, the developers note that the lowest-end configuration they’ve tested is a Unisoc Tiger T618 chipset with 3GB of RAM and a Mali-G52 MP2 GPU. The developers noted that this configuration still ran many games at a consistent frame-rate. For what it’s worth, we briefly tried Dragon Quest Builders on a Pixel 7 Pro and it seemed to run just fine. Your mileage will likely vary wildly owing the sheer variety of Android devices on the market, though.

Otherwise, setting up Vita3K is easy enough on Android, as the app provides links to download the PlayStation Vita firmware and other associated files. The one limitation at this point is that the emulator doesn’t support ROMs in the VPK format, only supporting ZIP or PKG files right now.

The early nature of the port also means that many games will have glitches or simply not run. But there’s a pretty substantial list of compatible games on the emulator’s website.
