Arts, culture, entertainment and events in Wilmington, NC

Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews cultural issues reporter John Staton.

As usual, there’s so much going on in Wilmington that it’s hard to keep track of, so I’d like to start this week’s newsletter by highlighting a couple of events that almost slipped through the cracks.

First up, a new Wilmington theater company, Pine & Curtain, is staging Beth Henley’s darkly humorous play “Crimes of the Heart” May 29-30 at Cape Fear Community College’s Union Station. (Incidentally, the movie version of the Southern classic was filmed in the Wilmington area back in the mid-1980s.)

Over on Castle Street, Wilmington artist Mandy Scott is having a big solo show sponsored by across-the-street spaces The Hideaway and Sip N Chill Lounge, both in the 600 block of Castle.

“Spring Love,” an exhibit of paintings and mixed-media works that Scott said explore “themes of motherhood, race, relationships” and more, has an opening reception 5-10 p.m. Friday, May 30.

Now, let’s see what else is going down this weekend.

Weekend weather outlook

It’s shaping up to be a pretty nice weekend, mostly sunny and not too hot. Highs in the low 80s, lows in the mid 60s, and a low chance of rain.

Go | See | Do

We’ve got quite the varied list of things to do in Wilmington this weekend.

In addition to a stacked lineup of concerts, we’ve also got the return of a classical music festival, the first weekend of Shakespeare on the Green’s annual month-long run at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater, the Port City Highland Games and even a ballet.

Check the full list below for even more options.

The Dish with Port City Foodies

Front Street Brewery in downtown Wilmington is marking 30 years in business; food writer Allison Ballard takes a look at the local staple’s past, and future.

Plus, a new tea room adds cozy charm to a historic space downtown, and Korean corndogs, vegan comfort food and more are coming to the Cargo District’s Cargo West food hub.

Getting to know ‘The Constitution’

I’m not sure there could be a better time to stage a play about the importance of the U.S. Constitution.

At any rate, Wilmington’s Big Dawg Productions is staging the Tony- and Pulitzer-nominated play “What the Constitution Means to Me” through June 1 at Thalian Hall’s studio theater. It stars Cathy Sanborn Street.

Read my review of this important, emotional and insightful play.

News you can use

A major roads project is coming to downtown Wilmington; get the details here.

Plus, we’ve got a big list of concerts to check out in June; an overview of places to catch live jazz; and a look at a feature film set that’s set to start shooting in Wilmington.
