Microsoft is axing one of its more beloved Android and iOS apps

Summary

  • Microsoft is retiring Lens and folding mobile scanning into OneDrive/Microsoft 365 Copilot.
  • Lens removed from app stores Feb 9, 2026; scanning stops Mar 9, 2026; old scans remain if app stays.
  • Lens had 4.8/5 ratings and 50M+ Android downloads, yet Microsoft still axed it.

As Microsoft begins to bring all of its apps under one roof, we’re seeing the ones that get left outside get axed in favor of the newer, shinier apps. We’re beginning to see the company introduce its best offerings under the Microsoft 365 Copilot banner, which has all the famous productivity apps and its infamous AI assistant rolled into one.

OneDrive is part of that suite, and with it comes a document scanner feature. As such, the company has opted to axe its other document scanning app so it can focus on other things. And while not many people may have heard of it, it seems that it had garnered quite the positive fan reaction before Microsoft gave it the axe.

OneDrive took over its job

As spotted by Neowin, Microsoft has announced that it’s discontinuing one of its mobile apps, Microsoft Lens. The app was a document scanner that let you use your phone’s camera to get the job done, and it was available on both Android and iOS.

OneDrive has since taken up the mantle of being the company’s document scanner, so Microsoft has made the decision to put Lens to bed. As it states on Microsoft Support:

The Microsoft Lens app will be retired from iOS and Android devices starting January 9, 2026, and will no longer be supported after February 9. You can continue to scan documents in the app until March 9, 2026. After that, you will not be able to create new scans, but you will still be able to access your previous scans if the app remains installed on your device.

Microsoft Lens will be removed from the Apple App store and Google Play Store on February 9, 2026.

It seems that Microsoft Lens had its fair share of fans, too. The app scored an impressive 4.8/5 score on both Android and iOS, with Google Play claiming that the Android version accrued over 50 million downloads over its lifetime. Unfortunately, that didn’t seem to be enough to convince Microsoft to keep it around, as it now recommends people use OneDrive instead.

If you were an avid fan of Microsoft Lens, now’s a good time to hop over to OneDrive so you’re not caught by surprise come March. If you’ve never given OneDrive a try before, be sure to check out these reasons Microsoft OneDrive is better than Google Drive.
