Hockey Canada welcomes William Huff Advertising as National Marketing Partner

Haneet Parhar thought she was done with hockey after university, but through coaching, the BFL Female Coach of the Year found her way back to the game

Haneet Parhar didn’t always have hockey in her plans. But for one reason or
another, hockey always found a way back into her life. And for that, Parhar
is forever grateful for the opportunities she’s had through the game.

Her passion for giving back to the sport that gave her so much has led to
her being honoured as the BFL Female Coach of the Year in the High
Performance category.

“There’s been so many times in my life where I’ve told myself ‘This is it, I
don’t know if I’ll ever go back to a rink or pick up my skates,’ and then
boom, I come back to hockey,” Parhar says.

As a student-athlete at the University of British Columbia, there was a lot
of uncertainty if she would even make the Thunderbirds roster. She would
eventually have a very successful U SPORTS career, winning three Canada West
championships, but her time at UBC also kicked off a career in coaching that
she never imagined.

From wanting to just stay involved as an 18-year-old undergrad student,
working as a coach in community rink programs and UBC hockey camps in the
summer, it reminded Parhar of the joy she found in hockey, for herself and
the kids in her programs.

“Doing it throughout my school and varsity career at UBC, I coached at the
recreational level for five-and-a-half years,” she says. “When you start at
that level, I really did it because I loved it. You see the kids smile and
it’s really easy to take away that hardcore style of coaching and do it for
fun. It was a great fit for

Canada visa: Spoke to Amit Shah, says Jakhar, others urge Mann govt to intervene | Chandigarh News

Cutting across party lines, Punjab politicians called for an early resolution to the Indo-Canadian stalemate that has resulted in Canada pausing visa and consular services in the three centres of Chandigarh, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Malwinder Singh Kang, chief spokesperson Aam Aadmi Party, Punjab, called it a very unfortunate development. “It is very sad that visa consular services at Chandigarh , Mumbai and Bengaluru have been stopped by the Canadian government. We urge govt of Punjab to take up the matter with the Canadian government at the top priority.”

Kang said this action has a direct impact on NRIs settled in Canada and the Punjabi community in India. “Canada is like a mini Punjab in many cities, and the period from November to March sees a significant influx of NRIs visiting their home state of Punjab. This benefits Punjab both economically and in terms of strengthening the social bonds between Punjabis in India and Canada. The issue demands immediate attention without unnecessary delays.”

Sunil Jakhar, president of BJP Punjab, also called for an early resolution of the issue. Speaking with The Indian Express, he said, “We do not want our students to suffer. During Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Amritsar in the recent past, I had taken up the matter with him, suggesting that instead of stopping visa services altogether, there can be some screening when they land here so that the genuine visitors can come to India.”

Jakhar added, “No doubt, there can be some implications on the Punjabi community settled in Canada and even Punjabis here in India. But it hurts Canada as well. Over 14 lakhs of Punjabis settled in Canada are their citizens, and it is the duty of the Canadian government to relook into their actions and policies. They need to reconsider their attitude

Think of the kids: New restrictions on food and drink advertising to children | Canada | Global law firm

Children are generally recognized by both industry and government to be a vulnerable or special audience when it comes to advertising. On June 28, 2023, a new advertising code will be coming into effect as released by Ad Standards Canada. It is intended to expand upon legislative, regulatory, and self-regulatory regimes that already exist in Canada (including in Quebec). In addition, on April 25, 2023, Health Canada provided a policy update on restricting food advertising primarily directed at children.

The new Code for the Responsible Advertising of Food and Beverage Products to Children (the Code) prohibits advertising food and drinks to children under the age of 13—unless certain nutritional thresholds are met. The Code targets all advertisements directed to residents of Canada that:

  • feature a food or drink product;
  • are “primarily directed” at children; and
  • appear in any media, including non-traditional media (e.g., social media, streaming services, apps, games, and product placements).

“Primarily directed” at children

When considering whether an advertisement is “primarily directed” at children, Ad Standards will consider:

  1. the product’s nature and intended purpose;
  2. how the advertisement is presented; and
  3. the time and place that the advertisement is shown.

Whether the advertisement is truly primarily directed at children will depend on context. Consider, for instance, the use of animations, music or special jingles. Ad Standards also notes that an advertisement may appeal to children without being “primarily directed” at them in some situations. For example, advertisements that use animation might not be “primarily directed” at children if:

  • broadcasted after 9 p.m.;
  • posted on age-gated websites; or
  • promoted at adult sporting events.

Ultimately, this is a fact-specific analysis and Ad Standards will evaluate each advertisement brought to its attention by its own merit.

But you know Kim Kardashian is probably the most obvious example of someone who had to pay real money and real prices. It wasn’t just simply an injunction to stop her from making the endorsement. She had to pay real money to kind of get out from under the liability that she had potentially created.

Andrew McCoomb  00:19
You’re listening to Disputed, a Norton Rose Fulbright podcast. In this episode, we’re talking with Erin Brown and Vic Domen about deceptive marketing practices, and in particular, misleading advertising by influencers on social media. Advertising has come a long way since the days of driving down the highway and seeing billboards. Influencer advertising is quickly becoming one of the most pervasive and effective forms of marketing out there. The Canadian Competition Bureau and the US Federal Trade Commission are concerned with ensuring that posts by influencers are not misleading, including as to whether they have a connection with the brand in question. Erin and Vic provide us with their takes on key areas that regulators are concerned with, penalties for influencers who engage in misleading practices – like not disclosing brand connections – and also talk about regulatory similarities and differences in the US and Canada. And of course, they also share best practices for influencers and companies alike. Erin Brown is a senior associate in our Ottawa office whose practice focuses on a wide variety of regulatory issues, including competition and antitrust law, international trade, economic sanctions and export controls, as well as customs and procurement, and she’s an avid consumer of social media herself. Vic Domen is a partner in our Washington, DC office, a government and antitrust investigations and prosecutions lawyer. As a former
