TL;DR

  • Google teased months ago that it would add the ability to share certain passes with other users in Google Wallet.
  • That feature is now starting to roll out.
  • The sharing feature is available for boarding and event passes.

About three months ago, Google mentioned that users would be able to share “valuables” in Google Wallet. It was then discovered on the app’s support page that valuables referred to passes. Now the feature is starting to roll out in the app.

As discovered by 9to5Google, Google Wallet is starting to let users share boarding passes through links. The feature is also said to be appearing for event passes as well.

If the feature is available, you should see the share icon to the left of the overflow menu. When you tap the icon, you’ll then be greeted by a notification stating, “You can’t undo sharing of this pass. Once you share this pass, the recipient can forward it to anyone.” This dialog can be turned off by hitting “Don’t show again.”

Continuing on, sharing will bring up a system share sheet and generate a link for you to share. The person who receives the link can tap on the URL, which will then open up the Wallet app, where the pass can be saved.

In an interview with The Verge back in July, Google spokesperson Leismer Schulten confirmed that sharing would come to the Wallet app. At the time, Schulten provided boarding and event passes as examples, a remark that leaves the door open for the possibility of the feature being used for other things down the line. He also stated that it will be up to the companies that issue these passes through Google Wallet to enable sharing.

Pixel 8 models arrive at FCC as Google sets a date for the launch event

What you need to know

  • Google Pixel 8 Pro and the Pixel 8 were spotted in an FCC listing.
  • The listings reveal connectivity options for both the Pixel handsets.
  • Both devices support WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and 5G connectivity.

The Google Pixel 8 series finally has a launch date set for October 4. On this day, the Pixel 8 Pro and the standard Pixel 8 are expected to arrive alongside a Pixel Watch 2. Ahead of the launch, the Pixel 8 devices have reportedly hit the FCC, giving us more of a glimpse at what to expect.

As noted by 9to5Google, the FCC has published a set of device paperwork filed by the search giant on Wednesday. These devices are believed to have GKWS6, G9BQD, GZPF0, GPJ41, and G1MNW model numbers. The GKWS6 model number was also spotted back in May at Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), revealing the Pixel 8’s wireless charging capabilities, which unfortunately is still limited to 12W.

Despite the multiple model numbers in the latest FCC filing, they are only the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro models likely catered to various regions with different model numbers majorly comprising connectivity aspects. As 9to5 notes, the paperwork of GZPFO from the FCC filing doesn’t feature mmWave connectivity, while it is otherwise similar to the G9BQD and GKWS6.

On the other hand, the G1MNW, likely the Pixel 8 Pro, appears to have UWB (ultra-wideband), while the other four don’t bear it, likely indicating Pixel 8 models. The other identical parameters from the listing suggest that both models include support for Bluetooth, WiFi 6E, and sub-6 and mmWave 5G.

Google Calendar makes event sharing as easy as image sharing

Google Calendar is one of the best calendar apps for Android, mostly because it benefits from the tight integration with Workspace apps. Such integrations allow conveniences like snoozing Google Chat during Focus time. However, Google still doesn’t make it easy for event organizers to invite a large group of people. That’s finally changing, and we have our first look at how event link sharing will work in the Android app.

Back in March, we reported Google was developing a new Share button for Calendar events, but it wasn’t functional at that time. Now, though, @AssembleDebug on Twitter gives us a good look at how this feature will work, saving us the hassle of editing each event and manually adding in every invitee’s email address.

Once the feature rolls out to everyone, there should be a prominent Share button placed underneath the event name and date. Tapping it opens up the standard Android share sheet you come across when sharing any other files, like images and documents. Here, you can pick the communication app of your choice and send an event link to the intended invitees.

This method is way more convenient for urgent events and events with a long list of invitees. Chances are you were already discussing the details with said invitees in a Telegram group, WhatsApp Community, or Discord server. So, you can conveniently share the event link in that space. Every recipient of the link will be able to tell you their availability using three preset buttons — Yes, No, and Maybe. The on-screen description accompanying the buttons reveals the actual Calendar link for the event will be forwarded to their email IDs.

Note that it is already possible to share calendar invites that way in some instances. When a calendar event has a

Google will hold a Search and Maps AI event next week

The company hasn’t shared many details about it just yet

Google has shared that it will host an online event on February 8 at 8:30 am ET, called “Live from Paris.” In the 45-minute event, the company will talk about how it will use AI to reshape search and how people interact with information, as the company told Android Police. It will be livestreamed on YouTube.

Google specifies in the YouTube description that the event will revolve around “Search, Maps, and beyond.” Further, exploring and interacting with information is supposed to become “more natural and intuitive than ever before to find what you need.”

ANDROIDPOLICE VIDEO OF THE DAY

The timing of the event is interesting, given that Google I/O is only about three months away when it takes place in its usual slot sometime in the beginning or middle of May. The developer conference itself is also rumored to primarily feature new AI features, with up to 20 to be released this year.

It’s possible that Google wants to react fast to AI advancements from other companies. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a natural language chatbot, has taken the internet by storm, and Microsoft has announced that it will bring the tech behind it to its search engine Bing.

There are reports that ChatGPT caused an internal code red alert at Google, with founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page summoned for an emergency meeting on how to accelerate Google’s own AI projects. Google is reportedly now pushing internal teams tasked with overseeing fairness and ethics in AI to approve projects faster.

The last few years, Google made clear that it is heavily investing in natural language AI, with its own general purpose chatbot LaMDA making headlines last year with a now-fired Google employee claiming that it was sentient, which the company
