1. Eventbrite

Eventbrite is one of the greatest event apps for finding local happenings of all kinds. Music festivals, craft shows, and even bar crawls are right at your fingertips.

Enable access to your location to see what’s happening around you or search by city. The app then gives you dates, times, locations, maps, and similar events. You can also check ticket prices and order those that are available.

You can browse events by category or search for something specific. Plus, you can share happenings with your friends or save your favorites with a free account. It’s even great for finding activities for your kids.

2. TickPick

The biggest benefit of TickPick is the app’s straightforward pricing model. One of the worst things about buying tickets from traditional ticket sites is the service fees. Although the concert ticket may be listed under $40, after service fees they often end up costing well over $50.

TickPick calculates all fees and assorted pricing directly into the displayed cost so that you know exactly how much it will cost you to attend local events. It’s a great way to find local events and figure out immediately whether you can afford to attend.

WhatsApp Communities could make tracking events much easier

Summary

  • WhatsApp beta for Android introduces automatically pinned events in Communities, saving users the hassle of manually pinning upcoming events.
  • Meanwhile, the events functionality within community groups has been under development since last year and hasn’t fully rolled out to beta testers yet.
  • Separately, a new marker notifying users of end-to-end encryption has been added to WhatsApp, although its necessity is debatable due to existing encryption verification features.

WhatsApp has been quite busy with feature additions over the last few years. The platform announced the broader rollout of Communities in late 2022, while Channels became available globally last September. While the latter has seen a handful of feature additions over the last several weeks, we’ve not seen Communities getting a lot of upgrades.

But that’s changing with the latest beta of WhatsApp for Android (v2.24.3.20), which contains a handy addition to Communities — automatically pinned events. This builds on an October 2023 beta update, which first showed hints of the events functionality coming to community group chats. We also reported on the same beta version introducing a redesigned Ul to the chat app.

Since the process is automatic, group members/admins won’t need to manually pin an upcoming event for everybody’s attention. WABetaInfo reports that events are automatically pinned whenever a community member sets one up, with the event appearing on top of the community info screen.

It’s worth mentioning here that the events functionality is not widely available on the beta channel yet, so it’s been stuck in development since last year. This explains why I wasn’t able to set up an event within a community despite being on the latest version of WhatsApp beta for Android.

Nevertheless, the fact that WhatsApp is working on automatically pinned events suggests that events are going to be a big

Google Play now shows ads, events in search history

Ads already appear throughout the Play Store, and Google is now showing them when you start a search, alongside other visual tweaks.

When you tap the Google Play search bar at the top of the app, you previously just saw your last four queries. Now, you might see up to three “limited-time events as well as sponsored suggestions,” with past searches appearing below that.

Limited-time events are an existing tool used to promote streaming apps that might have a particularly interesting sporting match later in the day or in-game events. They often appear as cards in the Play Store’s main feeds. They are now surfaced in search history with app name, icon, rating, and download count.

Additionally, Google Play is also showing “sponsored suggestions” that are explicitly labeled as an “Ad,” though some users would consider limited-timed events to be essentially the same thing. Both types disappear as you start typing your search.

Moving search history further down the list is unfortunate and telling in terms of company priorities. Meanwhile, a small tweak sees more prominent icons next to past queries for easier sorting.

This change was announced in the April Google System Updates changelog and has been rolling out in recent weeks. (We first spotted a variant of it in November 2022.) Google this week also detailed other Play Store additions, including “key app and game highlights from what others are saying” in Play search results.

You can also get “apps and games to download over cellular data from the download notification while waiting for Wi-Fi.”
