Galaxy W21 gets a new firmware update for June 2023

Last updated: June 27th, 2023 at 17:44 UTC+02:00

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 received the June 2023 security update in the USA precisely one week ago. Now, a similar firmware is rolling out in China on the renamed and redesigned Z Fold 2 for the region.

The Galaxy Z Fold series in China is known by the “Galaxy W” name. It’s that simple. The Galaxy W21 5G in China is the equivalent of the Z Fold 2 in other markets, and following in the footsteps of the international variant, the W-branded phone is now getting the June 2023 update.

The firmware number, W2021ZCU3FWF1, suggests that the update contains more than improved security for the month of June. And the official changelog, although not very rich, does confirm that the Galaxy W21 now offers better overall stability.

Different foldable phone, same update process

Although the Galaxy W21 is quite a different phone from the standard Galaxy Z Fold 2, the update process is very similar. New firmware can be downloaded via the Settings app after accessing the “Software update” section and tapping “Download and install.”

Or, if you happen to own the Galaxy W21 and prefer manual updates, you can download the official firmware files from our website and install the June 2023 update on the device using a Windows PC.

One of Samsung’s best-selling phones across the North American continent is getting new firmware. Which phone, and which firmware version? Well, in case you guessed that the Galaxy A13 is now receiving the June 2023 update, you are spot on.

More specifically, the carrier version of the Galaxy A13 featuring model number SM-A135U is now getting the June 2023 update in the USA. Among US carriers that roll out the update are: MetroPCS, T-Mobile, Dish, and US Cellular. As of this writing, there’s no sign of the update for the Galaxy A13 at Verizon.

If you want to update the carrier version of the Galaxy A13, tap the notification once it arrives on your phone or open the Settings app on the device, access “Software update,” and tap “Download and install.” Alternatively, if you prefer installing updates manually using your Windows PC, you can download the official firmware files from our website.

More than a routine security patch?

The new update carries firmware version A135USQU5CWE8, and this string of letters and numbers indicates that the new software package contains more than just the June 2023 security patch. However, Samsung has yet to update its changelog feed, so there’s no telling what new features and improvements this firmware could bring to the Galaxy A13.

As far as the June 2023 security patch is concerned, Samsung had it detailed a week ago. It features 53 fixes for Google security flaws found in Android phones and tablets, along with 11 patches for security vulnerabilities that affect Samsung devices exclusively.

Time will tell when the unlocked Galaxy A13 will get a new update in the USA and when the June patch may or may not land on the device outside North America. You can keep

June Android 13 QPR3 update with next Pixel Feature Drop is late

Given that two out of the last three updates arrived late, we’re not too surprised that Android 13 QPR3 with the June 2023 security patch and the next Pixel Feature Drop is not yet out.

Historically, Google releases Pixel security patches on the first Monday of the month at 10 a.m. In March, Android 13 QPR2 rolled out a week late, while the Verizon variant for the Pixel 6 and 6a series took another seven days. Despite being a more minor update, the same thing happened in April. Things went back to normal last month, but the delay has now returned.

As of 10:30 a.m. (PT), the stable release of Android 13 QPR3 has not been announced. We do, however, have the Android Security Bulletin—June 2023. There are 23 security issues resolved in the Android 13 June patch dated 2023-06-01 and 34 for 2023-06-05. Google warns that:

There are indications that CVE-2022-22706 may be under limited, targeted exploitation.

The vulnerability relates to ARM Mali GPUs and has a “high” severity.

It comes as the Android 13 QPR3 Beta Program was quite sporadic. Beta 1 arrived in mid-March and Beta 2 went out after only two weeks compared to the usual month-long wait. Beta 3 followed three weeks later with Beta 3.2 being the last release in mid-May.

Android 14 might have played a role given the close release cadence, while another factor might be how the Pixel Tablet and Fold are launching with Android 13 QPR3.

Meanwhile, given the side-by-side release cadence, June’s Pixel Watch update is likely also delayed.
