Google’s Weather UI redesign starts appearing on more Android phones

It looks like Android phones are starting to receive their Weather UI redesign in the Google app. The rollout was brought to Mishaal Rahman’s attention on X after he received several reports from users about it.

The Weather “app” is essentially tucked into the overall Google app on Android. The redesign swaps out the old three-tabbed view for “Today,” “Tomorrow,” and “10-day outlook” for a single streamlined view.

The redesign fits well with Google’s Material You design language that it features throughout Android and its own apps.

Most of what users are now finding calls back to some early teasers a Google member posted during the spring. A “Now” section welcomes users with quick bits of information such as the current temperature and an hourly forecast followed by the 10-day outlook.

One aspect that’s shown up is the addition of a weather warning for users in between the Now section and the hourly forecast. Looks like this could help those glancing at the weather for any trouble before heading out.

Google now allows people who use both Microsoft Outlook and Google Calendar with the same email address to seamlessly receive Calendar invitations — and subsequently RSVP to them with their preferred platform. After an event is created in Google Calendar, a meeting reminder will pop up in Outlook to let attendees know that it’s coming up.

This new layer of interoperability continues Google Calendar’s recent usability trend. Google has been readying an improved notification system for Calendar and Contacts that could support custom birthday reminders. While it might only be available to some as of right now, the update has slowly been rolling out to its users. Also in Google’s sights is spam protection, which has been enabled in many of its apps including Calendar and Google Drive.

Google starts testing generative AI in search, ads included

Google is pushing to keep pace with competitors that have gotten an early lead with generative AI but whose search products are not as widely adopted.

The race to transform search using generative AI is kicking into high gear. While Google’s implementation of the technology is not surprising — and has basically been a given since February — more formal tests demonstrate that the tech giant is moving quickly to address the competitive threat posed by rivals that were early to jump on the trend. Google’s announcement comes a week after Microsoft shifted AI-powered Bing from limited to open preview, welcoming more consumers into the fold. 

Google’s early experiments with generative AI in search, dubbed the Search Generative Experience (SGE), are part of a new Search Labs program. Already, users in the UK, Japan, and several other regions are seeing ads when tapping the search bar, suggesting that Google might be in the early stages of a widespread rollout.

One thing that makes these clearly different from the recommendations Google started rolling out in November is the “Ad” badge next to the new suggestions. In most cases, the ads appear mixed in with Google’s proactive recommendations, so it could be that only users who have the suggestions feature enabled on their accounts are getting the ads.

Rahman also notes that when compared to the initial rollout of search suggestions last year, the new interface people have started seeing this week includes more information about the apps. The user rating and total number of downloads are now listed in the subtitle beneath each suggestion, including both ads and the proactive recommendations.
