Want Android AI on Your PC? How to Get Google Gemini as an App on Windows

If you like Google Gemini AI on your Android phone, you can install it as a PWA on your Windows machine. Here’s how.

Many Windows users have Android devices because the platforms are more compatible than iOS. For instance, you can connect your Android phone or use your Android device as a webcam on Windows 11.

You are probably familiar with Microsoft Copilot AI on Windows 11 but might also want access to Google’s Gemini AI from the desktop. There isn’t an official Gemini app for Windows, but you can install it as a progressive web app (PWA) from Edge or Chrome. With Gemini installed as an app, you don’t need to cycle between your phone and PC screens to use it.

A PWA is a website wrapped in a browser frame without navigation controls and toolbars. It is not a new technology but allows a site to act more like an app on your PC. For example, we showed you how to use PWA technology to install Apple Maps on the web, and speaking of AI, you can add ChatGPT as an app on your Windows machine. In fact, with Edge or Chrome, you can install many services as a PWA.

While you don’t get any special features as you would from an official app, some users prefer the app-like experience of a website, which they can pin to the Start menu or taskbar. This is additionally a solid workaround while waiting for an official desktop app to be released.

Create a Google Gemini PWA from Google Chrome

Creating a PWA on Windows 10 or 11 is also straightforward if you are a Chrome user, but the steps vary.

  1. Launch Google Chrome.
  2. Head to the Google Gemini website and sign in.
  3. Click the three-dot button (Customize and Control Google Chrome) in the top right corner of the browser.Customize and Control google Chrome buttonCustomize and Control google Chrome button

  6. Once you complete the steps, the Gemini PWA will open, and shortcuts will be available in the Start menu and taskbar.

Note: If you install it from each browser, optionally naming the shortcut icons can help if you create one using both browsers since the icons are identical.

Getting All the AI You Need

While there aren’t official AI apps for ChatGPT or Google Gemini, you can use this as a workaround to get the different brands of AI on your Windows PC. Microsoft’s AI is baked into Windows 11, but you can disable Copilot or turn it off in Edge if you aren’t a fan.

You won’t get any more features from a PWA than you do by opening the Gemini site; it provides a more app-like experience. If you prefer that, use the above steps from Chrome or Edge.
